With a wide range of flights worldwide, traveling to Bali has never been easier. Whether you're looking for a budget flight or want to travel in style, many flight options suit everyone's needs. However, too much choice can also be confusing, and people often don't know where to start. In this Guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about booking a flight to Bali, including when to go, how to avoid common mistakes, what to look out for when choosing a flight, and much more.
This Guide is divided into the following sections:
Where to Buy Flight Tickets
Where to buy a flight ticket to Bali? Most travelers would answer wherever is the cheapest. But this is only partially true. It all depends on your requirements, not only for the ticket itself but also for the things involved in buying it: for example, whether you prefer to buy your ticket directly from the airline, intermediaries, or various aggregators. There are advantages and disadvantages associated with each option. Let's compare the four biggest flight search websites we recommend following and then a selection of companies that fly to Bali that you can contact directly.
Flight Search Engines
Some of the flight search websites we recommend checking when searching for your flight tickets are Google Flights, Skyscanner, Kayak, and Momondo.
💡 Tip: Always use the anonymous tab in your browser to search for tickets (Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N, Safari: File > New Private Window). Vendors track what tickets you search for and how often and might manipulate prices in your browser based on this.

Airlines
Many people prefer to buy their tickets directly from the airlines themselves. The main advantages include better customer support and loyalty programs. In addition, airlines often offer cheaper tickets because they do not have to pay fees to intermediaries. Another advantage may be greater flexibility in seat selection or easier ticket changes.

Low-cost Companies
Low-cost airlines often offer discount fares that can be half the price of their competitors, and at first glance, they seem like the obvious choice. However, it must be clear that they can hardly be half the cost if they fly the same distance as the prestigious airlines. So always look for the "catch." Common shortcomings of "low-cost" flights include:
❗ Many transfers
❗ Long transfer times
❗ Meal during the flight for an extra charge
❗ Checked-in baggage for an additional fee
❗ Connecting flights are from another airport in the same city
So if you add everything that other airlines have already included in the standard price to the bargain ticket, the final ticket price can be even higher than with a traditional airline.
Of course, suppose someone is looking for the cheapest possible connection and is willing to travel without food on the plane, for example, and doesn't need check-in baggage and doesn't consider it a problem to spend 12 hours or more on a connecting flight. In that case, low-cost airlines are a good solution that will often save you money.
Selected low-cost airlines flying to Bali:
Directly at the Airport
You can try to buy tickets directly at the airport, and if you're lucky enough to get on a plane that's just leaving as the airline needs to fill it and will be willing to sell the tickets for a fraction of the price. However, we have yet to experience this and do not recommend it due to the lower frequency of flights to Bali. The likelihood of success is, we think, low.
When to Buy Flight Tickets
People often ask us when is the best time to buy tickets. For example, whether it's a few months in advance or just a week before departure. Unfortunately, there is no rule for buying a cheap flight ticket. There are several variables that play into the resulting amounts, such as the price of oil, the overall supply and demand for flights, competition, aircraft load factors, seasonality, and more. Only the airlines can see these criteria; the price changes dynamically based on them. Even the day of the week or the time you make the transaction affects the total amount you pay for your ticket.
Generally, airfares (and accommodation, etc.) to Bali are more expensive between June and September and then in December, when Bali's peak tourist season. But that doesn't mean you won't come across some special promotions during this period that will get you a better deal on flights.
It is believed that it is best to start looking for a ticket 3 to 5 months before departure. Airlines then try to fill the plane with all sorts of deals before it's too close to the departure date. If they fail to do this, they must sell the tickets at reduced rates. This is only sometimes 100 % true, however, as ticket prices change every day. The cheapest tickets are usually midweek; Fridays and weekends are more expensive due to increased demand. But this is not a rule for all airlines. For example, it is generally not true for long intercontinental flights.
The best solution, which we apply, is to look at the airfare market a few months before departure and frame the prices at which airfares are moving, and based on that, determine the price you are willing to pay for the ticket. Then look at the cost of flights to your destination on an ongoing basis (for example, weekly). Once you find a ticket that is acceptable to you at "your" price, buy it. At the same time, once you have purchased the ticket, we recommend that you do not keep track of the offers so that you will be okay if the price drops even further. :)
It's impossible to predict the price development, so you can never be sure that the prices won't decrease even more.
Our Recommendation
The following points are our recommendations on what to look out for when choosing a flight ticket.
-
Always compare the exact offers - don't just look at the price. Look at the number of transfers, whether meals and checked baggage are included, how long the connection takes, including transfers, etc.
-
Ensure you have checked baggage on all flights on your connection, so you don't have to pay extra. On low-cost airlines, it may happen that, for example, a flight to Dubai has baggage included, but the connecting onward flight does not.
-
Check that the arrival and departure of the connecting flight are from the same airport, and if it is not, make sure you can make the transfer in the connecting time and still have some time to spare.
-
Consider whether you have enough time to make the transfer. In some places, an hour may be enough; in others, especially if you are changing terminals, an hour may not be enough. It also depends if you have checked your bag from the departing airport to the destination airport or if you must pick it up and check it again.
-
Check the conditions of the carriage and which items can be placed in which baggage: checked-in and cabin luggage. Different airlines have different rules, such as power banks, etc.
-
When buying tickets online, make sure you fill in your name and passport number correctly. Any typo in the name will invalidate the ticket, or you may have to pay for an expensive change. In the worst case, you will not be allowed on the plane.
-
Check in advance whether you need a visa for the transit country.
-
You probably won't be allowed on a plane with only a one-way ticket when traveling to Indonesia. To find out how to solve this, see Travel Regulations Guide.
