Full & New Moon
The full moon and the new moon are significant events for the Balinese. Even the Balinese Saka calendar is derived from the phases of the moon. The Balinese see the moon as a timekeeper and a guide to the world. At the time of the full moon (Purnama in Balinese), the moon god Chandra is believed to send his blessings and magic down with his light, reminding people of their inner light. The most important and sacred full moon of the year is in the 10th month (Kedasa) of the Saka calendar when the ceremonies are at their greatest.
The full moon is honored by the locals with offerings of food, fruit, and flowers. Day-long full-moon celebrations begin in the morning and continue until midnight. During these, locals pray in temples, recite mantras, and bring offerings in traditional white clothing to the ceremonies. It is also customary to perform the Melukat ritual of purification in holy water at designated temples such as Pura Tirta Empul. Bathing in holy water is supposed to purify the aura, wash away all sins, and help to stay young and attractive.
The most important ceremonies and events on the new moon are Nyepi, Siwa Ratri, and last but not least, the Muslim Ramadan, which affects about 15 % of the population living in Bali. During Ramadan, Muslims are not allowed to have sex, drink alcohol, or use drugs; from sunrise to sunset, they are not allowed to eat or drink. The aim is to curb materialism and strengthen self-esteem and connection with Allah. This is how it lasts for 29 days.
Even on the new moon, Balinese prepare offerings in front of their house and in the local temple, where prayers are held with a priest. On this day, Hindus pray to the sun god Surya, asking for the enlightenment of their negative thoughts and reminders of the light within themselves. Men wear a sarong in brown or black for new moon ceremonies.
