Bali Kite Festival
The kite flying festival is also a religious festival, as the flying of kites sends a message to all Hindu gods to have a good crop and harvest.
It is held annually in Sanur on Padang Galak beach in June or August when conditions are best for kite flying. The whole festival is run as a team competition, with the best kite take-off and length of flight being judged. Each team can have up to 80 members, including members of the Gamelan band.
Generally, three types of kites are used, each controlled by at least ten people and reaching giant sizes of up to 4 meters in width and 10 meters in length.
Bebean (fish-shaped): is the largest of the kites
Janggan (bird-shaped): has a long tail that can reach up to 100 meters
Pecukan (leaf-shaped): it is unstable and the most difficult to control and often falls to the ground
Each type of kite has its competition, and ten teams compete in each. There is also a competition for the most creative kite, where you can see different 3D renditions of Hindu gods.
Traditional Gamelan music flows through the festival, which attracts the attention of local and international tourists every year.
