Independence Day
Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated annually on 17 August to commemorate the Declaration of Independence on 17 August 1945 and the liberation from colonialists from the Netherlands after 300 years of rule and 3.5 years under Japanese rule. The day is declared as a national holiday throughout Indonesia.
In Bali, Independence Day is celebrated mainly by hanging Indonesian flags in all accessible and inaccessible places. You can find flags over the streets, at intersections, on cars, in shop windows, and more. During the day, locals also take to the streets to clean up their surroundings. Local rallies are held around the island with activities such as climbing oiled palm tree trunks, a footbag race, and tug-of-war.
During Independence Day, you can expect the traffic situation to worsen as locals take the day off to visit friends or go to activities related to the celebrations.
