about

Kajeng Keliwon

Kajeng Keliwon day is sacred to Balinese Hindus. It is held every 15 days. It is when the Kajeng day of the 3-day Triwara week and the Keliwon day of the 5-day Pancawara week of the Balinese Pawukon calendar meet.

This is a day suitable for cleansing the mind and the environment of the house from negativity. On this day, Balinese Hindus meditate, pray to Shiva for support and protection, and make offerings to him.

The purification of the mind begins with a ceremony called Metirtha Gocara, performed along with offerings of Canang Sari and Wangi-wangian, sweet-smelling scented sticks of flowers at the family's Sangga temple and the Plankiran wall shrine in the house. Other offerings to evil spirits are placed in front of the house and on the street.

During the laying of the offerings, evil spirits are asked not to disturb the household and its members. Prayers are said for the safety of the house and the well-being and happiness of the individual family members who live there. They also pray to the supreme god Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa for the world's and its creatures' safety and well-being.

Kajeng Keliwon exists in three different versions:

  • Kajeng Kliwon Uwudan takes place after the full moon (Purnama)

  • Kajeng Kliwon Enyitan takes place after the new moon (Tilem).

  • Kajeng Kliwon Pemelastali, or also Watu Gunung Runtuh, is the holiest and occurs once every 210 days, on Wuku Watugunung Sunday according to the Balinese calendar Pawukon.

For the exact dates of the Kajeng Kliwon, please visit the Ceremonies and Events Guide and add our Google Calendar with ceremonies.

Kajeng Keliwon is celebrated every 15 days, and Kajeng Keliwon Pemelastali is celebrated once every 210 days (1 year according to the Balinese calendar Pawukon).
