about

Pegatwakan

Pegatwakan or Pegat Warah is regarded as the end of a whole series of ceremonies beginning with the festival of Galungan. By completing the entire series of Galungan, the day ends by focusing on contemplation to limit the mind but still reflecting on religious considerations and increasing self-awareness. During Pegatwakan, all equipment for religious ceremonies is returned to its usual place in the temple or storehouse.

The hallmark of Pegatwakan day is the removal of the Penjors that have been installed outside houses since the Tuesday before Galungan. After removal, the Penjor is cleaned of decorations which are then burnt. Some residents plant the ashes in a young yellow coconut in the middle of the yard. Some place the coconut in the hole left by the Penjor. It is believed to be a symbol of the life force.

Pegatwakan is celebrated once every 210 days (1 year according to the Balinese calendar Pawukon).

Other names: Pegat Uwakan, Pegat Warah
