about

Siwa Ratri

Siwa Ratri is celebrated during the new moon of the 7th month (Kepitu) of the Balinese calendar Saka, and this day is meant for self-reflection and meditation. On this day, the Balinese pray to the god Shiva to be forgiven of their sins. During the day and night, the faithful maintain several rituals to remind the locals to be vigilant and always think of the gods.

The origin of this holiday comes from the story of a hunter named Lubdaka who was hunting and got lost. Afraid of the animals at night, he climbed a tree but feared falling if he fell asleep. So all night, he plucked leaves from the tree, which he threw into the lake below him while chanting prayers to Shiva. Then in the morning, he got home safe and sound. When he later died, Shiva welcomed him in the afterlife and erased his sins because he had prayed and meditated all night.

Siwa Ratri (the night of Shiva) has since been commemorated with meditation, fasting, and vigil. Therefore, this night is referred to as the longest.

The day begins with morning prayer, followed by three rituals:

Upawasa: Do not eat or drink for 24 hours

  • Fasting is meant to represent self-control and self-reflection to achieve spiritual enlightenment.

Monabrata: Do not speak for 12 hours

  • Silence teaches not to act impulsively, spread evil, lie, or listen attentively.

Mejagra: Don't sleep for 36 hours

  • Sleep deprivation enhances mindfulness and a conscious approach to life.

The rituals during Siwa Ratri help to overcome materialism and build a closer connection with God through prayer and surrender. The rituals teach better self-awareness and self-control. Each of the rituals is followed by prayers and bringing offerings to the temple in the house.
