Waisak Day
Waisak Day is the most important day for Buddhists, of which there are about 1.7 million in Indonesia. It is a celebration of the anniversary of the birth of the Buddha and is a national holiday.
Before dawn, Buddhists gather in front of temples (for a map of Buddhist temples in Bali, see the Temples Guide) to hold ceremonies to honor the Buddha and his teachings. After the ceremony, Buddhist flags are raised, and hymns are sung. To the Buddha statue, worshippers bring offerings in the form of flowers, which symbolize life - they are beautiful but eventually, wither and die. It is also a reminder of the impermanence of life.
Waisak Day is always celebrated on the full moon of the 4th calendar month of the Hindu calendar, which falls in May or early June of the Gregorian calendar.
Other names: Vesak Day
